Brussels (Belgium) 20 May 2025 (SPS) – The Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Sahrawi Republic, Mr. Mohamed SaYeslem Beisat, held bilateral talks this Tuesday evening in the Belgian capital, Brussels, with the Algerian Minister of Foreign Affairs and National Community Abroad, Mr. Ahmed Attaf.
The meeting took place on the sidelines of their expected participation in the 3rd African Union–European Union Foreign Ministers Meeting, scheduled for tomorrow, Wednesday, May 21.
The discussions provided an opportunity for both sides to exchange views on the latest developments regarding the question of Western Sahara, particularly at the regional and international levels.
The two ministers also reviewed ongoing efforts to advance the political settlement process aimed at enabling the Sahrawi people to exercise their inalienable and non-negotiable right to self-determination, in accordance with international legality.
They also addressed the main points on the agenda of the joint ministerial meeting, which this year marks the 25th anniversary of the AU-EU partnership. Key issues include peace and security, governance, multilateralism, development and prosperity, as well as migration and peoples’ mobility.
In the same context, the Sahrawi Republic participated earlier today in the Senior Officials Meeting of AU and EU member states, held in Brussels. The Sahrawi delegation included Mr. Omar Mansour, Polisario Front’s representative in charge of relations with European institutions, and Ambassador Lamine Baali, Permanent Representative of the Sahrawi Republic to the African Union.
The main ministerial session is scheduled to take place tomorrow, Wednesday, from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, and will be co-chaired by the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Ms. Kaja Kallas, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Angola, Mr. Téte António, in his capacity as Chair of the AU Executive Council.
The AU-EU partnership, now in its 25th year, is gaining increasing strategic importance amid current global challenges, with Europe seeking to strengthen its presence on the African continent in the face of growing competition from other global and regional powers, highlighting the multifaceted dimension of this cooperation.
