Managua (Nicaragua), 27 May 2026 (SPS) – The Sahrawi issue received strong support during the Caribbean Regional Seminar organized by the United Nations Special Committee on the Situation with regard to the Implementation of the Declaration on the Granting of Independence to Colonial Countries and Peoples (Committee of 24), under the framework of the Fourth International Decade for the Eradication of Colonialism (2021–2030), which has concluded its work in Managua, the capital of Nicaragua.
The opening ceremony was attended by Mr. Denis Moncada, one of Nicaragua’s Foreign Ministers, who delivered a speech praising the work of the Special Committee on Decolonization and stressing the need to accelerate the end of colonialism in all its forms and manifestations.
Referring to his country’s historic support for liberation and decolonization causes, Minister Moncada reaffirmed Nicaragua’s support for the legitimate rights of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic.
During their interventions at the seminar, Algeria, Angola, Belize, Cuba, Iran, Namibia, Nicaragua, South Africa, Timor-Leste, Venezuela, and Zimbabwe expressed strong support for the Sahrawi people’s exercise of their inalienable right to self-determination and independence, in accordance with UN General Assembly Resolution 1514 (XV), containing the Declaration on the Granting of Independence to Colonial Countries and Peoples.
The participating states also called on the Special Committee to pay close attention to the human rights situation in the occupied Sahrawi territories and to the systematic plundering of natural resources by the Moroccan occupying state. They stressed the need to intensify efforts within the Special Committee and the United Nations to expedite the holding of a self-determination referendum for the people of Western Sahara, in line with the mandate for which the MINURSO mission was established.
The states further strongly condemned attempts by the Moroccan occupying state to impose a fait accompli in the occupied Sahrawi territories and firmly rejected any solutions that do not respect the Sahrawi people’s inalienable right to self-determination and independence. They called on the United Nations to assume its responsibility in completing the decolonization of the last colony in Africa.
A Sahrawi delegation participated in the Caribbean Regional Seminar, including Dr. Sidi Mohamed Omar, member of the National Secretariat, Polisario Front Representative to the United Nations, Coordinator with MINURSO; Mr. Mohamed Zroug, Ambassador in charge of Latin America and the Caribbean; and Mr. Abdelrahman Mohamed Yeslem, Chargé d’Affaires at the Sahrawi Embassy in Nicaragua.
