Shaheed Al-Hafed, July 5, 2025 (SPS) – Sahrawi students in Amhamid al-Ghazlan have condemned the punitive measures taken against Sahrawi students at Ibn Zohr University in Agadir, who have been summoned to appear before a disciplinary council on July 7, 2025, due to their peaceful political activism on campus.
In a statement, the students of Amhamid al-Ghazlan asserted that this decision—inseparable from the broader context of repression and persecution targeting Sahrawi voices across Moroccan universities—exposes the Moroccan state’s continued policy of silencing dissent and strangling freedoms. They emphasized that this amounts to an undeclared ban on any student activity expressing the political stance of Sahrawi students or advocating for their people’s cause. These arbitrary measures, they added, not only violate freedom of political expression but also undermine students’ right to a democratic and safe education, disrupting their academic progress and exacerbating their psychological and social suffering.
The Sahrawi students in Amhamid al-Ghazlan described this move as part of a systematic, repressive machinery aimed at criminalizing political expression and suppressing peaceful Sahrawi student activism. By leveling vague accusations such as "undermining territorial integrity," authorities are blatantly violating international conventions guaranteeing freedom of opinion and assembly—even flouting the rights enshrined in Morocco’s own constitution. They denounced the heightened surveillance, arbitrary summons, and intimidation tactics designed to create an atmosphere of fear among Sahrawi students, vowing that such repression only strengthens their resolve to continue their peaceful struggle for their people’s legitimate rights.
The students declared their full and unconditional solidarity with their peers targeted by these unjust measures at Ibn Zohr University, rejecting all forms of repression and harassment faced by Sahrawi students across Moroccan campuses. They called on all believers in justice and freedom, as well as all sectors of the Sahrawi people, to stand in unwavering solidarity and support to safeguard Sahrawi students’ rights and defend freedom of expression within universities.
The statement reaffirmed the Sahrawi students’ commitment to their right to peaceful activism on campus and to defending the just Sahrawi cause through all legitimate means.
