New York (United Nations), 13 October 2026 (SPS) – The People’s Republic of China has described the Western Sahara question as a historical legacy of colonialism, stressing the need for a just, lasting and mutually acceptable solution in accordance with international law and relevant United Nations resolutions.

Speaking before the Fourth Committee of the United Nations General Assembly, China emphasized that the UN Charter laid the foundations for the eradication of colonialism and the advancement of decolonization. It noted that the Declaration on the Granting of Independence to Colonial Countries and Peoples explicitly called for an immediate and unconditional end to colonialism in all its forms and manifestations.

China observed that colonialism continues to have harmful consequences and that the principles of the UN Charter have yet to be fully implemented. It called on the international community to reaffirm the Charter’s founding principles, accelerate the decolonization process, eliminate the legacy of colonialism and uphold international fairness and justice.

Regarding Western Sahara, China stressed that the parties concerned should be guided by the purposes and principles of the UN Charter and relevant Security Council resolutions, engaging in consultations on an equal footing to achieve a just, lasting and mutually acceptable solution in accordance with international law and relevant UN resolutions.

China also reiterated its support for United Nations efforts to resolve the Western Sahara question, emphasizing the importance of a settlement grounded in international legal frameworks and relevant UN resolutions.
