Gaza (Palestine), 11 October 2026 (SPS) – The Palestinian Committee for Solidarity with the Sahrawi People has issued an urgent humanitarian appeal to the United Nations, its Personal Envoy for Western Sahara and several international leaders and prominent figures, calling for immediate intervention to save the lives of Sahrawi civilian prisoners on hunger strike in Moroccan prisons, particularly members of the Gdeim Izik prisoner group.

The appeal was addressed to the UN Secretary-General, his Personal Envoy for Western Sahara, Pope Francis, the Secretary-General of the Arab League, the Chairperson of the African Union and the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, among other influential international figures. It urged them to take immediate action to end the prisoners’ suffering and safeguard their lives.

The committee noted that members of the Gdeim Izik group have been imprisoned in Morocco for years in connection with the events surrounding the Gdeim Izik protest camp, established by Sahrawi civilians to demand their rights. The appeal also referred to alleged violations and arrests following the camp’s dismantling.

The committee called for urgent measures to protect the hunger strikers and ensure that they receive the necessary medical care in accordance with international humanitarian and legal standards. It further urged relevant international bodies to use their influence to press for an end to violations of the prisoners’ rights and dignity and to address their conditions of detention.

It also called for the immediate, comprehensive and unconditional release of Sahrawi civilian prisoners and an end to forms of detention and treatment that violate their fundamental human rights.

The committee stressed that the prisoners’ lives could not be subjected to delays or political calculations, warning that failure to take concrete measures could heighten the risks they face. It urged the United Nations and international institutions and figures to translate their humanitarian positions into urgent, practical action to save lives and protect the prisoners’ dignity.

The Palestinian Committee for Solidarity with the Sahrawi People concluded its appeal by urging the international community to act before it is too late, safeguard the lives of Sahrawi prisoners on hunger strike and ensure respect for their fundamental rights.
