Mexico City, 11 October 2026 (SPS) – Minister of Foreign Affairs and African Affairs Mohamed Yeslem Beissat has called on progressive forces to step up political action in defence of peoples’ right to self-determination and the eradication of colonialism.
He made the appeal at the closing session of the 30th International Seminar “Political Parties and a New Society”, organised by Mexico’s Labour Party.
In his address, the minister thanked the party’s president, Professor Alberto Anaya Gutiérrez, as well as the participating Mexican and international political forces, stressing the need to translate solidarity into parliamentary initiatives, political positions and concrete practical measures.
Beissat condemned human rights violations in the occupied territories of Western Sahara, drew attention to the situation of Sahrawi political prisoners on hunger strike, and denounced the plundering of the territory’s natural resources. He also reaffirmed the Sahrawi people’s inalienable right to self-determination and independence.
“Peoples’ freedom is not granted as a favour; it is recognised as a right. Rights can only become a reality when there is the political will to defend them,” the minister stated.
He concluded by calling for stronger coordination among political parties, social movements and solidarity organisations to turn the principles of justice, freedom and decolonisation into effective commitments and concrete action on the ground.
