New York (United Nations), 11 October 2026 (SPS) – The Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) has reaffirmed its support for the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination, expressing strong backing for the efforts of the United Nations Secretary-General and his Personal Envoy to achieve a just, lasting and mutually acceptable political solution that enables the Sahrawi people to exercise this right.

The position was conveyed in a statement delivered by Uruguay’s representative on behalf of the group, reaffirming CELAC’s commitment to the relevant resolutions adopted by the United Nations General Assembly and Security Council on Western Sahara, including General Assembly Resolution 80/89, which was adopted by consensus.

The statement stressed that any proposed solution must be consistent with the principles and purposes of the United Nations Charter, General Assembly Resolution 1514 (XV) on the granting of independence to colonial countries and peoples, and other relevant resolutions.
