Rio de Janeiro (Brazil), July 6, 2026 (SPS) – The 23rd National Congress of the Brazilian Socialist Youth Union (UJS), held from July 2 to 5 in Rio de Janeiro, concluded by adopting a political declaration expressing its profound and unwavering solidarity with the Sahrawi people and their just cause, while calling for an end to the Moroccan occupation of what it described as Africa's last colony.
The international youth gathering was marked by the participation of the Polisario Front's representative in Brazil, Mr. Ahmed Moulay Ali, whose presence provided an opportunity to highlight the Sahrawi people's struggle and the latest developments in their quest for freedom and independence. The event also featured extensive meetings with delegations and prominent figures who expressed their unconditional support for the Sahrawi people's right to self-determination.
In its final declaration, the Brazilian Socialist Youth Union, which is committed to opposing wars and their devastating consequences for humanity, affirmed its strong support for the Sahrawi youth and people, who, according to the statement, have been subjected since 1975 to systematic Moroccan colonial policies aimed at genocide.
The congress called on youth organizations and political parties worldwide to openly express their solidarity with the Sahrawi cause, stressing that recognition of the Sahrawi state constitutes the fundamental guarantee for stability, peace, and justice in North Africa.
The Brazilian Socialist Youth Union urged governments around the world, particularly the Brazilian government, to officially recognize the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic as a free and independent state and a future member of the United Nations, in accordance with international law, the rulings of the International Court of Justice, African and European courts, and the positions of the BRICS countries.
The declaration further strongly condemned what it described as serious human rights violations committed by the occupation authorities against Sahrawi civilians in the occupied territories, calling for the immediate and unconditional release of all Sahrawi political prisoners held in Moroccan prisons.
Finally, the statement renewed its call on the United Nations to fulfill its responsibilities by organizing a free, fair, and transparent referendum that guarantees the Sahrawi people's inalienable right to self-determination and independence.
