Ait Melloul (Morocco), April 1, 2026 (SPS) – The two Sahrawi students and civilian prisoners, Ibrahim Babit and Salah Eddine Essabar, have announced the start of an open-ended hunger strike inside Ait Melloul local prison in Morocco, in protest against what they describe as their harsh detention conditions and in rejection of all practices that undermine their human dignity in prison.

According to information received by the Sahrawi League for the Protection of Prisoners, the protest action undertaken by Ibrahim Babit and Salah Eddine Essabar inside Ait Melloul prison comes after exhausting all forms of communication and dialogue with the prison administration, in an effort to improve their detention conditions and ensure humane and dignified treatment, and to put an end to all forms of targeting inside the prison.

Through this open-ended hunger strike, the two Sahrawi students and civilian prisoners aim to shed light on the suffering of Sahrawi students inside Moroccan prisons and the systematic targeting, starting from police harassment and fabricated charges, to the non-independent judiciary issuing unfair and unjust sentences against them in retaliation for their political positions and their defense of the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination and independence.
