Shaheed El Hafed, 16 October 2026 (SPS) – A high-level delegation participating in the North African Regional Workshop of the African Committee of Intelligence and Security Services (CISSA) visited the Sahrawi refugee camps on Thursday to learn about the work of Sahrawi state institutions and organisations active in humanitarian assistance, mine action and combating drug trafficking.
The delegation began its visit at the Association of Families of Sahrawi Prisoners and Disappeared Persons (AFAPREDESA), where it was briefed on the organisation’s human rights work and efforts to follow up on the cases of Sahrawi prisoners held in Moroccan occupation prisons.
The programme also included visits to the Sahrawi Red Crescent to learn about its humanitarian operations and field experience, and to the Sahrawi Mine Action Coordination Office (SMACO), where the delegation received information on mine-clearance activities and the impact of mines planted by Moroccan occupation forces in Western Sahara, which continue to claim civilian lives.
The delegation was also scheduled to examine samples of drugs reportedly trafficked into the region and receive a briefing on trafficking methods and measures taken to counter the phenomenon.
The North African Regional Workshop was held in Algeria from 12 to 15 October under the presidency of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic. Its discussions focused on the consequences of the spread and consumption of drugs in North Africa.
The visit also included a tour of the National Museum of Sahrawi Resistance, which documents the Sahrawi people’s struggle, followed by a cultural evening showcasing Sahrawi heritage and traditional arts.
