SADC reaffirms solidarity with Sahrawi people in their struggle for self-determination

Antananarivo, 18 August 2025 (SPS) - The heads of State and government of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) reaffirmed, during their 45th ordinary summit, Sunday in Antananarivo, their solidarity with the Sahrawi people in their just struggle for their right to self-determination.

“SADC has reaffirmed its solidarity with the people of Western Sahara in their quest for self-determination,” said the final communiqué released after the 45th ordinary summit of the sub-regional organization, which took place in Madagascar's capital.

The summit also welcomed the signing of a memorandum of understanding between SADC and the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR), said the source.

It also reaffirmed “the complementary nature of the UN-led process on Western Sahara's self-determination” and stressed “the importance of coordinating the implementation of the SADC-SADR memorandum with the UN process and all African Union initiatives” on the issue, according to the communiqué.
