Luanda (Angola), August 29, 2026 (SPS) – President of the Republic, Secretary-General of the Polisario Front, Mr. Brahim Ghali, arrived today, Saturday, in the Angolan capital, Luanda, heading a delegation to participate in the proceedings of the 21st Extraordinary Session of the African Union (AU) Assembly of Heads of State and Government, dedicated to discussing and strengthening mechanisms for conflict prevention and resolution on the African continent.
The extraordinary session will be held on August 30, under the theme “Strengthening Mechanisms for Conflict Prevention and Resolution in Africa,” with the participation of the heads of state and government of AU member states, alongside the leadership of the African Union Commission. The session comes amid a growing need to strengthen African capacities in conflict prevention, management and resolution.
The summit’s agenda will begin with the opening session, which will feature addresses by the President of the Republic of Angola, Mr. João Manuel Gonçalves Lourenço; the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mr. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf; and the Chairperson of the African Union and President of the Republic of Burundi, Mr. Évariste Ndayishimiye.
The closed session will include the adoption of the agenda and discussions on strengthening mechanisms for conflict prevention and resolution in Africa. These discussions will be based on a presentation by the African Union Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security, Ambassador Bankole Adeoye, as the lead speaker, as well as a presentation by the African Union High Representative for Financing the Union and the Peace Fund, Dr. Donald Kaberuka.
The discussions are expected to focus on ways to enhance the effectiveness of African mechanisms for conflict prevention and resolution, as well as strengthening the African Union’s capacity to respond to crises and conflicts on the continent, thereby contributing to the promotion of peace, security, stability and development in Africa.
The session will conclude with consideration and adoption of the draft decision, action plan and implementation matrix on conflict prevention and resolution in Africa, which constitute the key expected outcomes of the extraordinary summit.
The summit is also expected to provide an opportunity to reaffirm Africa’s commitment to developing African solutions to the conflicts facing the continent and to strengthening the role of AU institutions and mechanisms in early prevention, mediation, crisis management and conflict resolution, thereby reinforcing the principle of African solutions to African problems.
On the sidelines of the summit, President Brahim Ghali will participate in various scheduled activities and meetings. The occasion will enable the Sahrawi delegation to reaffirm the Sahrawi Republic’s principled position calling for respect for the principles and Constitutive Act of the African Union, foremost among them respect for the sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of states, the peaceful settlement of conflicts, and respect for the right of peoples to self-determination.
The session is scheduled to conclude with a closing meeting featuring statements by the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, the Chairperson of the African Union and the President of the Republic of Angola, followed by a press conference for the participating African leaders.
President Brahim Ghali is accompanied by a delegation comprising Mohamed Yeslem Beissat, Minister of Foreign Affairs and African Affairs; Salha El Abed, Secretary-General of the Presidency of the Republic; Lamine Baali, Permanent Representative to the African Union; Hamdi Khalil, Ambassador to Angola; and Moussa Bilal, Director of African Affairs and African Union Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
