Shaheed El Hafed, April 4, 2026 (SPS) – The Sahrawi Mine Action Coordination Office (SMACO) commemorated today, Sunday, the International Day for Mine Awareness, observed annually on April 4.

The commemoration activities began with a speech by SMACO Director, Mr. Taleb Haidar, who welcomed attendees from organizations, associations, and field workers, praising the efforts made in mine clearance, the removal of unexploded ordnance, and raising awareness about the dangers of mines.

SMACO Operations Officer, Mr. Ghaithi Ennah, emphasized that the world marks this day to promote awareness of the dangers posed by mines, highlighting that Sahrawi territories are among the most contaminated and dangerous regions in terms of mine presence.

Ghaithi clarified that, in addition to the threat of mines, the Moroccan occupation has increased the targeting of unarmed civilians through the use of drones following the resumption of armed struggle.

The event featured interventions from several organizations working in this field. An exhibition was held, including photographs and publications reflecting the SMACO’s work in clearance and awareness, as well as images of mine victims. Samples of anti-personnel mines were displayed, along with images showing drone strikes targeting civilians and their vehicles, and cluster bombs used by the Moroccan occupation army against unarmed civilians.
