Algiers, February 27, 2026 (SPS) – The Sahrawi Ambassador to Algeria, member of the National Secretariat, Mr. Khatri Addouh, reaffirmed the Sahrawi people’s firm and inalienable right to self-determination and independence, considering that this principle is “the core of any just and lasting solution to the conflict.”
During his address at a conference hosted by the Algerian National Institute for Comprehensive Strategic Studies, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the proclamation of the Sahrawi Republic, the ambassador pointed out that the establishment of the Sahrawi Republic on February 27, 1976, came as “the culmination of an integrated historical, legal, and struggle-based process, grounded in the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination following the withdrawal of the Spanish administration.”
He stated that the proclamation of the Sahrawi Republic “provided a legal and political framework to organize the struggle, embody national unity, build state institutions, and strengthen its international presence.”
He added that the Sahrawi people, despite the challenges and the protracted nature of the conflict, “demonstrate their readiness to engage in any serious and responsible process leading to a just and final settlement that guarantees the right to self-determination in accordance with international legitimacy and relevant United Nations resolutions,” stressing that “denying this right will only prolong the conflict.”
