(Bir Lahlou, Sahrawi Republic, 31 October 2025) SPS - The Frente POLISARIO issued a statement today following the adoption by the Security Council of Resolution 2797 (2025), whereby it decided to extend the mandate of the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO) until 31 October 2026.
While reaffirming its continued readiness to engage constructively in the UN-sponsored peace process in Western Sahara, the Frente POLISARIO stressed that it would not be party to any political process or negotiations based on any proposals, regardless of where they originate, which aim to “legitimise” Morocco’s illegal military occupation of Western Sahara and deprive the Sahrawi people of their inalienable, non-negotiable, and imprescriptible right to self-determination and sovereignty over their homeland.

COMMUNIQUE
[Bir Lehlou, Sahrawi Republic - 31 October 2025] On 31October 2025, the Security Council adopted resolution 2795(2025) whereby it decided to extend the mandate of the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO) until 31 October 2026. The extension of MINURSO mandate today testifies to the Security Council’s continued commitment to a just and lasting solution in line with its relevant resolutions on Western Sahara.
In its resolution, the Security Council recalls and reaffirms all its previous resolutions on Western Sahara and reaffirms its commitment to assist the parties to achieve a just, lasting, and mutually acceptable political solution consistent with the principles and purposes of the Charter of the United Nations, which provides for the self-determination of the people of Western Sahara. It also calls upon the two parties to engage in the discussions without preconditions and leaves the door open for discussing all proposals to support a final mutuallyacceptable solution.
The Security Council’s full recognition that the conflict cannot be resolved without the Sahrawi people and without the exercise of their inalienable right to self-determination is a clear response to the attempts of Morocco, the occupying state, which, with strong support from some powers, sought to make the Council adopt a resolution that would definitively settle the conflict in favour of its expansionist position within a few months.
The Frente POLISARIO has, however, taken note of some elements contained in the resolution, which constitute a very dangerous and unprecedented departure from the basis upon which the Security Council has addressed Western Sahara in line with the principles enshrined in the UN Charter. They also violate the international status of Western Sahara as a decolonisation issue, undermine the foundations of the UN peace process in Western Sahara and thwart the efforts of the UN Secretary-General and his Personal Envoy.
The resolution moreover does not take into account and effectively address all the substantive matters raised by the majority of Member States of the Security Council and by the Frente POLISARIO in both its letter addressed to the President of the Security Council on 23 October 2025 and its bilateral engagements with the penholder and all stakeholders concerned.
The Frente POLISARIO is the legitimate and solerepresentative and voice of the Sahrawi people who have massively taken to the streets across the world these days to say loud and clear that they are strongly attached to their non-negotiable right to self-determination and independence and to defending their rights and sovereignty by all legitimate means.
While reaffirming its continued readiness to engage constructively in the UN-sponsored peace process in Western Sahara, the Frente POLISARIO stresses that it will not be party to any political process or negotiations based on any proposals, regardless of where they originate, which aim to “legitimise” Morocco’s illegal military occupation of Western Sahara and deprive the Sahrawi people of their inalienable, non-negotiable, and imprescriptible right to self-determination and sovereignty over their homeland.
The Frente POLISARIO presented its Proposal to the UN Secretary-General on 10 April 2007, which was taken note of by the Security Council in its resolution 1754 (2007) and subsequent resolutions. It also submitted an expanded Proposal to the UN Secretary-General on 20 October 2025 asanother testament to its genuine commitment to achieving just and enduring peace. It remains ready to engage positively in the peace process and to enter into direct negotiations with the other party based on the spirit and content of its expanded Proposal and in accordance with General Assembly resolution 1514 (XV) and other relevant United Nations resolutions.
In conclusion, the Frente POLISARIO stresses that the unilateral approaches that seek to sacrifice the rule of law, justice, and peace for short-term political expediency will only exacerbate the conflict and endanger peace, security and stability in the entire region.
