New York (United Nations), October 19, 2025 (SPS) – The member of the National Secretariat, Representative of the Frente POLISARIO to the United Nations and Coordinator with MINURSO, Dr. Sidi Mohamed Omar, reaffirmed that the Sahrawi people remain firmly and resolutely determined to defend their legitimate and non-negotiable rights to freedom and independence, for which they have made great sacrifices.
This reaffirmation came during an interview the Sahrawi diplomat gave Saturday from New York to the Sahrawi National Television evening news, where he discussed the proceedings and outcomes of the session of the UN General Assembly’s Special Political and Decolonization Committee (Fourth Committee), which addressed the question of Western Sahara as part of its agenda.
In this context, the Sahrawi diplomat reiterated that the resolution adopted by the Fourth Committee on Thursday reaffirms, as it does every year, the legal framework of Western Sahara as a decolonization issue, and the inalienable right of the Sahrawi people to self-determination and independence in accordance with the principles enshrined in the UN Charter and General Assembly Resolution 1514 (XV), which proclaims the granting of independence to colonial countries and peoples.
He added that this resolution constitutes a strong and clear response to the attempts of the Moroccan occupying state to distort the legal nature of the Sahrawi question by repeatedly advancing the same misleading claims and relying on the positions of a few countries that support its expansionist policy in Western Sahara, as well as its frantic campaign aimed at undermining the Sahrawi people’s inalienable right to self-determination and independence.
The Sahrawi diplomat also referred to the recent position expressed by the Non-Aligned Movement, which once again reaffirmed the Movement’s stance in support of the United Nations’ efforts to reach a peaceful, just, and lasting solution that guarantees the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination in line with relevant UN resolutions.
In response to a question regarding reports about a document said to contain a draft resolution of the UN Security Council on Western Sahara, the Sahrawi diplomat clarified that, as of Saturday, the Security Council had not yet received any draft resolution. He noted that the contents of the circulated document merely reflect the well-known position of the United States itself, not that of the Security Council as a whole or its 15 members.
In this regard, he stated: “The position of the United States of America on the question of Western Sahara has been well known since the time of President Gerald Ford and his Secretary of State Henry Kissinger. The U.S. supported Morocco’s occupation of Western Sahara from the very beginning; it backed the so-called ‘Black March,’ and has since continued to support the occupying state diplomatically and militarily. This position was advanced further in 2020 and reaffirmed again in April of this year.”
Concluding his remarks, the POLISARIO Representative to the United Nations and Coordinator with MINURSO stressed that “the destiny of the Sahrawi people is not in the hands of the United States, France, or any other party. It lies in the hands of the Sahrawi people themselves, who remain steadfast and determined to defend their legitimate, non-negotiable rights to self-determination, independence, and the full restoration of sovereignty over the entire territory of the Sahrawi Republic — not today, not tomorrow, and not ever.”
