Geneva (Switzerland), 18 July 2026 (SPS) – The Polisario Front has called on the UN Special Rapporteurs to intervene urgently to enable Sahrawi prisoner Naâma Asfari to receive the necessary medical care.
In a letter addressed by the Polisario Front's representative in Switzerland and to international organizations in Geneva, the Polisario Front called for Mr. Asfari to be granted, immediately and without restrictions, access to an independent medical examination and to the necessary treatment and healthcare in accordance with international standards and medical ethics.
It also called on the Kingdom of Morocco to immediately implement the recommendations of the Committee against Torture and the opinion of the Working Group on Arbitrary Detention, including the immediate release of Mr. Naâma Asfari.
The letter called for an end to his prolonged solitary confinement and his transfer to a prison facility closer to Western Sahara, allowing his family to visit him regularly. It also urged the Moroccan authorities to engage in serious and responsible dialogue with Sahrawi political prisoners in line with international human rights standards.
The letter further called on the Moroccan authorities to provide urgent information on the measures taken to protect Mr. Naâma Asfari's life and physical integrity during his hunger strike.
The letter added that the current situation poses a direct and serious threat to Mr. Asfari's life. It also stated that the continued failure to implement decisions issued by United Nations bodies undermines the credibility of the UN human rights system and weakens the Kingdom of Morocco's respect for its obligations under international law.
Given the gravity and urgent nature of the situation, the Polisario Front called on the Special Rapporteurs to intervene immediately to prevent irreparable harm and to take all measures within the scope of their mandate to protect Mr. Asfari's life, dignity and fundamental rights.
