Strasbourg (European Parliament), 22 October 2025 (SPS) – The headquarters of the European Parliament witnessed on Tuesday the announcement of the establishment of a new friendship group entitled “Peace for the Sahrawi People,” supported by a large number of Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) from various political groups represented in the chamber.

The initiative was launched by several MEPs known for their solidarity with the Sahrawi people, who called for the convening of the group’s inaugural meeting. The event was attended by a number of MEPs, political group coordinators, and members of relevant parliamentary committees.

Representing the Sahrawi side were Mansour Omar, member of the National Secretariat of Frente POLISARIO Representative to Europe and the European Union, and Basiri Lebsir, Coordinator of the Sahrawi Representation in Europe.

In his address, Mansour Omar expressed deep appreciation for the efforts of the European parliamentarians in forming this group, emphasizing that this step comes at a critical stage in the Sahrawi people’s struggle against colonialism.

He called on the European Parliament and friends of the Sahrawi people to exert pressure on the European Commission to respect the rulings of the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU), particularly the landmark judgment issued on 4 October 2024, which the Commission is seeking to violate by implementing a new, unlawful agreement with the occupying state of Morocco.

The “Peace for the Sahrawi People” group aims to promote an active and coordinated European policy that strives for a just, urgent, and lasting solution to the conflict in Western Sahara.

The group will also work to urge European institutions, particularly the European Parliament, to ensure the enforcement of European court rulings related to the Sahrawi case.

This initiative carries special significance in light of the European Commission’s ongoing attempts to circumvent the CJEU’s judgment that annulled agreements between the European Union and Morocco for their inclusion of the occupied territories of Western Sahara.

The formation of the group also coincides with growing international calls to uphold the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination, ahead of the forthcoming United Nations Security Council resolution expected at the end of this month. (SPS)
