Chahid El Hafed (Sahrawi Refugee Camps) 25 July 2026 (SPS) – Flora Marrero Ramírez, Representing the International Association of Jurists for Western Sahara (IAJUWS), reaffirmed the organization's unwavering commitment to continuing legal advocacy and international litigation against violations committed under the Moroccan occupation, in defense of the rights of the Sahrawi people and their sovereignty over their land and natural resources.
Speaking at the international Conference on "The Legal Battle and the Sahrawi People's Permanent Sovereignty over Their Natural Resources," held on Saturday at the headquarters of the Presidency of the Sahrawi Republic in Chahid El Hafed, Marrero explained that the Association, founded in 1996, brings together a network of lawyers and legal professionals from around the world, including Spain, Mexico, Ecuador, Colombia, Argentina, Uruguay, and Bolivia. She noted that one of its primary objectives is to provide legal counsel and comprehensive legal defense on issues relating to Western Sahara.
The Spanish lawyer outlined the Association's principal areas of work, highlighting its continued defense of Sahrawi political prisoners, particularly the Gdeim Izik Group, through international advocacy campaigns denouncing the lack of legal protection afforded to them and calling for their treatment in accordance with international standards applicable to political prisoners.
She also stressed the Association's ongoing efforts to challenge arms deals involving the Kingdom of Morocco, arguing that supplying weapons to an occupying power constitutes a clear violation of international law. In addition, she referred to the Association's continued pursuit of the legal case concerning the 1975 genocide.
Concluding her remarks, Flora Marrero underscored the Association's annual participation before the United Nations Fourth Committee (Special Political and Decolonization Committee), where it consistently denounces the unlawful exploitation of Western Sahara's natural resources.
She further affirmed that the Association's guiding principles are founded on the defense of human rights, the right of peoples to self-determination, the completion of the decolonization process, and opposition to all violations of international law.
She concluded by renewing the Association's invitation to all legal professionals committed to defending the just cause of the Sahrawi people to join its efforts. (SPS)
