Statement of the Frente POLISARIO on the Question of Western Sahara before the Special Political and Decolonisation Committee (Fourth Committee) of the UN General Assembly, Ambassador Sidi Mohamed Omar, Representative of the Frente POLISARIO at the United Nations and Coordinator with MINURSO, New York, 8 October 2025
Mr Chair,
Distinguished Representatives of Member States,
I am pleased to address again the Fourth Committee on behalf of the Frente POLISARIO, the legitimate and sole Representative of the people of Western Sahara, in accordance with the relevant resolutions of the General Assembly and the Security Council.
Today, the Fourth Committee convenes to address the question of Western Sahara, the last decolonisation case in Africa on the agenda of the United Nations since 1963.
This month marks fifty years of Morocco’s illegal occupation of Western Sahara, which was deplored by the Security Council in 1975 and by the General Assembly in 1979, among other things.
It has been fifty years of brutal occupation and oppression, but also fifty years of struggle, resistance and, above all, a strong determination by our people to defend our freedom and independence for which we have paid so dearly.
Unable to learn from the past fifty years, Morocco, the occupying state, persists in its misguided belief that it can forcibly impose a fait accompli on our people. It is trying to promote its “colonialist proposal”, which is only a “travesty” whose aim is to “legitimise” the illegal occupation of our country.
Let us be very clear. There is no peace nor justice under brutal occupation rooted in oppression, tyranny and terror. It is time to call a spade a spade and act accordingly. Morocco’s occupation of Western Sahara is illegal. It must end immediately.
As the Secretary-General said, in his address to the General Assembly this year, the United Nations is more than a meeting place. It is a moral compass, a force for peace, and a guardian of international law.
The United Nations must live up to its responsibilities regarding Western Sahara and enable our people to exercise freely and democratically their inalienable right to self-determination and independence.
Our people have made tremendous sacrifices for achieving just and lasting peace. Today their message to you is very clear: we will never give up our inalienable rights and will continue to defend our national aspirations for freedom and independence by all legitimate means.
I thank you for your attention.
