Algiers, 25 March 2024 (SPS) - At the initiative of Algeria, backed by the other elected members, UN Security Council adopted Monday a resolution demanding an "immediate ceasefire for the month of Ramadan" in Gaza, opening the way to the end of nearly six months of Zionist entity's genocidal assault on the population of the Palestinian enclave.

Rejected several times by the United States, which had been using the veto, the call for an "immediate ceasefire" in Gaza passed after the abstention of the US.

The resolution has been adopted by 14 votes in favour with the United States abstaining.

It "demands an immediate ceasefire during the month of Ramadan," which is likely to lead to a "lasting ceasefire."

The resolution was presented by the ten elected members of the UN Security Council (E-10) to promote an "immediate, lasting and unconditional ceasefire" in Gaza.

Within the E10 group, Algeria was behind the resolution, of which it had been negotiating the content with the other members of the Security Council.
