Boumerdes (Algeria), August 18, 2026 (SPS) – Dr. Sidi Mohamed Omar, member of the National Secretariat, Polisario Front Representative to the United Nations and Coordinator with MINURSO, affirmed that the Sahrawi cause is an international issue governed by the Charter of the United Nations and its relevant resolutions, as it is a question of decolonization.
He stressed that this has legal and political implications, including recognition of the Sahrawi people’s inalienable right to self-determination and independence, in accordance with General Assembly Resolution 1514 of 1960.
The statement came during interviews the Sahrawi diplomat gave to several Algerian media outlets after delivering a lecture entitled “The Sahrawi Cause at the United Nations” during the 14th edition of the Summer University for Executives of the Polisario Front and the Sahrawi Republic, held in Boumerdes Province, Algeria.
Speaking about the significance of the Summer University for Sahrawi Executives, Dr. Sidi Mohamed Omar said the annual gathering embodies the strength of the bonds of brotherhood and solidarity between the Algerian and Sahrawi peoples. He added that it also provides a forum for studying and discussing major issues related to the Sahrawi cause from political, legal and human rights perspectives.
Regarding the latest developments at the Security Council following the adoption of Resolution 2797 (2025) in October last year, the Sahrawi diplomat noted that a political process began to take shape at the start of this year through three rounds of informal ministerial consultations between the two parties to the conflict, the Polisario Front and Morocco, with the participation of the two neighboring brotherly countries and observers, Algeria and Mauritania.
He added that this process is still in its early stages and that it is therefore too soon to judge its progress or outcome, given the numerous obstacles that remain. “What we see on the horizon and what exists in reality is that the Moroccan occupying state has no genuine political will to move toward a peaceful and just solution in accordance with UN resolutions, which provide for a solution guaranteeing the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination,” he said, adding that Morocco continues to insist on its expansionist project and seek to entrench its illegal occupation of parts of the Sahrawi Republic.
In this regard, he stressed that what the Sahrawi people expect from the international community, particularly the United Nations, is the implementation of the decisions it has adopted concerning the Sahrawi cause, which are clear in both legal and political terms. He said the basis of the solution, the party concerned and the means of implementation are all clearly defined.
“The basis of the solution is the exercise by the Sahrawi people of their inalienable right to self-determination and independence. The only party concerned is the Sahrawi people, while the means of implementation lies in consulting the Sahrawi people through a free, fair and transparent referendum,” he said. He added that the fundamental problem does not lie in the framework of the solution, but rather in the position of the Moroccan occupying state, which continues to seek to entrench the reality of colonial occupation by force.
Dr. Sidi Mohamed Omar concluded by saying that the Moroccan occupying state’s relentless campaigns to distort the struggle of the Sahrawi people are nothing more than evidence of the failure of its expansionist project. He said this had led Morocco to “throw itself into the arms of its twin occupation, namely the Israeli occupation,” but stressed that this would not affect the determination of the Sahrawi people to continue their struggle to defend their legitimate rights to freedom and independence and to complete their sovereignty over their entire national territory.
