Chahid El Hafedh (Sahrawi Refugee Camps), May 18, 2026 (SPS)– The Sahrawi Association of Victims of Landmines (ASAVIM) received yesterday evening at its headquarters a delegation from the African Union composed of experts specialized in landmines and explosive remnants of war (ERW), as part of a visit aimed at assessing the situation of victims and the efforts undertaken in this field.
The African delegation was welcomed by the president of the association, accompanied by the heads of its various departments, who provided detailed briefings on the nature of the association’s work and the main programs and activities it implements for the benefit of mine victims, whether at the material, health, psychological, or moral support levels.
Members of the delegation also attended presentations highlighting the association’s experience in assisting victims and supporting their social reintegration, in addition to examples of successful initiatives carried out by the association in various areas of assistance and rehabilitation despite the challenges and limited resources available.

In the same context, the African delegation was informed of the scale of human losses caused by landmines and explosive remnants of war, as well as the humanitarian tragedies and ongoing suffering inflicted on civilians, particularly in the liberated territories, but also in the occupied territories, where accurate information remains difficult to obtain due to the blockade and media blackout.
During the meeting, officials of the association stressed the importance of granting greater attention to the issue of landmines by the relevant bodies of the African Union through strengthening support, awareness-raising, and international advocacy programs, and by working to reduce the risks that threaten civilians’ lives on a daily basis.
