New York (United Nations), 26 September 2025 (SPS) – The leaders of several countries reaffirmed, during the 80th UN General Assembly, in New York, their countries’ consistent position in favor of the Sahrawi people and their right to self-determination, in accordance with the resolutions of the United Nations.

Speaking at the UN, Namibian President, Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, condemned what she described as the “blockage and deadlock” affecting the Security Council's handling of Western Sahara, saying that “this situation in the Security Council regarding Western Sahara represents an injustice spanning over 34 years, since the adoption of the Resolution 690 in 1991.”

“It's high time to hold a referendum in Western Sahara, under the aegis of the United Nations, allowing the Sahrawi people to exercise their right to self-determination,” the Namibian President said.

For his part, South Africa reaffirmed its unwavering support for the Sahrawi people and their legitimate cause. South African President Cyril Ramaphosa said that his country “backs the Sahrawi people's right to self-determination.”

“As UN General Assembly member states, we accept our responsibility to reaffirm our support for the Sahrawi people's inalienable right to self-determination,” affirmed the South African president.

For his part, Spain's King, Felipe VI, emphasized the need to resolve the Western Sahara conflict in line with international law and relevant UN resolutions.
