New York (UN), 25 (SPS) - Namibian President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah has stated at the 80th session of the UN General Assembly that Namibia's position on the issue of Western Sahara is "firm and inalienable," reiterating her country's continued support for the independence of the people of Western Sahara.
Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah called before the United Nations General Assembly for an end to the Moroccan occupation of parts of Western Sahara and urged respect for the self-determination of the Sahrawi people. "The Security Council and the good offices of the Secretary-General must work to resolve all conflicts, including those ongoing in different parts of Africa. The stalemate in the Council on the question of Western Sahara is an injustice, more than 34 years after the adoption of Resolution 690 (1991)," she emphasized.
Thus, Namibia committed before the UN General Assembly to support the right of the Sahrawi people to self-determination and independence in accordance with relevant United Nations resolutions. "The time has come to hold the UN referendum on the right to self-determination for the people of Western Sahara," she demanded.
