Occupied El Aaiún, September 7, 2026 (SPS) – The Sahrawi League for the Protection of Prisoners in Moroccan Occupation Prisons received information from the family of Sahrawi civilian prisoner Ahmed Sebai, stating that he will begin a 48-hour warning hunger strike starting Tuesday.
The hunger strike comes in protest against the continued arbitrary detention of Ahmed Sebai by the Moroccan occupying state, despite a clear and binding decision issued by the United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention, which called for his release, along with that of his fellow prisoners, and for compensation for the period of their detention.
Sahrawi civilian prisoner Ahmed Sebai also denounced the Moroccan occupation prison administration’s disregard for his legitimate demands, foremost among them the right to medical care and treatment, improved conditions inside the prison, and his transfer to a prison inside Western Sahara so that he can be close to his family.
The Sahrawi League for the Protection of Prisoners in Moroccan Occupation Prisons stresses that these practices form part of the Moroccan occupying State’s continued policy of systematic retaliation against Sahrawi civilian prisoners and its evasion of its legal obligations under United Nations decisions, including the recommendations of the UN Committee against Torture.
It also holds the Moroccan occupation authorities fully responsible for the life of Sahrawi civilian prisoner Ahmed Sebai and for any health consequences that may result from this hunger strike.
The League calls on all United Nations bodies and international human rights organizations to intervene urgently and pressure Morocco to immediately respond to the demands of Sahrawi civilian prisoner Ahmed Sebai, immediately release him and all Sahrawi prisoners held in Moroccan occupation prisons, and end all forms of torture and ill-treatment in Moroccan occupation prisons.
