Geneva, 4 July 2025 (SPS) – The representative of the Polisario Front in Switzerland, the United Nations, and international organizations in Geneva, Ubbi Bushraya Bashir, affirmed that the momentum gained by the Sahrawi cause during the 59th session of the Human Rights Council should cast a shadow over the situation in the occupied territories of Western Sahara. This should be achieved by exerting pressure on the occupying state of Morocco "so that it does not remain immune from punishment."

In a statement to the Sahrawi News Agency (SPS) on Friday, the Sahrawi diplomat stressed that "the strong momentum gained by the Sahrawi issue during the June-July session of the Human Rights Council must reflect on the situation in the occupied territories of Western Sahara by pressuring the Moroccan occupying state to immediately and unconditionally release Sahrawi political prisoners in Moroccan jails and to open the region to human rights organizations and journalists, away from the policies of systematic repression and siege."

In the same context, Ubbi Bushraya Bashir renewed his call to the international community to "ensure Morocco does not remain immune from punishment." He urged the United Nations to halt what the Polisario representative described as "the policy of exceptionalism in Western Sahara" and to apply real pressure on the occupation to compel it to comply with international legitimacy. He also called for international monitoring of the human rights situation in the occupied territories of Western Sahara.

Ubbi Bushraya Bashir emphasized that the current session of the Human Rights Council was an opportunity to advocate for the Sahrawi people’s cause through organizing numerous seminars, cultural events, and human rights activities to highlight the struggle of the Sahrawi people.

The Polisario representative also commended the strong presence of representatives from influential countries at the events organized by the Sahrawi delegation. The diplomatic attendance was marked by the reaffirmation of these countries' positions in support of the Sahrawi people’s right to freedom and independence.

Additionally, he noted the prominent role played by Sahrawi women in the success of these events, particularly through organizing a symposium for resistance women. This was an opportunity to shed light on the grave violations committed by the occupying state against the Sahrawi people in the occupied territories.

To highlight the cultural dimension of the Sahrawi cause, the diplomat stated that this time, cultural presence distinguished the activities, including the screening of the film "Four Days in Western Sahara" and the setup of a model tent for the "Our Tent" project. These initiatives showcased the unique customs and traditions of the Sahrawi people, which form part of the cultural diversity of the continent and the world.
