Madrid, 5 November 2026 (SPS) – Polisario Front official in charge of natural resources and legal affairs, called on the European Union to put an end to the state of legal uncertainty and swiftly implement the rulings of the European Court of Justice annulling the EU-Morocco trade and fisheries agreements insofar as they include the occupied Sahrawi territories.

Speaking at a political seminar held at the European Parliament under the title “The Sahrawi People's Struggle Today: 51 Years After the Madrid Accords,” the Sahrawi official urged Brussels to play a positive role in the region and respect international law instead of continuing to support the Moroccan position.

He held Spain and European institutions responsible for contributing to the current deadlock within the UN Security Council, considering that Madrid's support for the Moroccan autonomy proposal in 2022 helped set in motion the developments that led to the failure to renew the mandate of the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO).

He stressed that the end of MINURSO's mandate does not relieve the UN Security Council of its responsibilities regarding the decolonization of Western Sahara, nor does it affect the Sahrawi people's inalienable right to self-determination and independence.

The seminar also featured interventions by Polisario Front Representative in Spain, Abdallah Arabi; Coordinator of the Sahrawi Representation to Europe, Bachiri El-Bassir; and Film Festival Director, María Carrión. Their contributions addressed the political and legal dimensions of the Sahrawi question and the role of culture and art in supporting the Sahrawi people's struggle.

The event concluded with the presentation of a report entitled “Tourism of Occupation,” prepared by the European Parliament's Friends of Western Sahara group. The report highlights Morocco's use of tourism in the occupied territories to consolidate the status quo, as well as the involvement of foreign companies in economic activities in the territory in violation of international law.
