Toulouse (France), November 4, 2026 (SPS) – Communist elected officials in France’s Occitanie region have reaffirmed their support for the Sahrawi people's right to self-determination and independence, stressing that cooperation between Occitanie and Morocco must respect international law and the right of peoples to self-determination.
In a statement issued on November 3 under the title “Occitanie–Morocco: For Cooperation that Respects Peoples’ Rights,” members of the Communist, Republican and Citizen Group warned against initiatives that could undermine international law.
The statement follows the Morocco–Occitanie economic meeting held in Toulouse on October 29, where investment opportunities in the occupied territories of Western Sahara were presented under the Moroccan designation of “Southern Provinces”.
The elected officials stressed that Western Sahara remains on the UN list of Non-Self-Governing Territories and that its people must be allowed to exercise their right to self-determination freely, in accordance with UN resolutions and international law.
They also reiterated their support for a just, peaceful and lasting political solution enabling the Sahrawi people to freely determine their future.
The statement emphasized that cooperation between Occitanie and Morocco must be based on mutual respect, solidarity among peoples and respect for international law, affirming that friendship between peoples cannot come at the expense of their fundamental rights.
