New York (UN), 13 October 2026 (SPS) – Iran has reaffirmed the United Nations’ ongoing responsibility towards the Sahrawi people and their inalienable right to self-determination, stressing the need for their effective participation in any UN-led process to resolve the Western Sahara issue.

Addressing the UN General Assembly’s Fourth Committee on Monday, the Iranian delegation emphasised that the Sahrawi people’s views must be clearly established in accordance with relevant UN resolutions and that their future must reflect their own aspirations rather than be imposed by external political considerations.

Iran reiterated its support for the UN Secretary-General and his Personal Envoy in facilitating dialogue towards a just, lasting, comprehensive and mutually acceptable political solution, in line with the UN Charter and relevant resolutions.

It also called for good-faith negotiations without preconditions, stressing the need to preserve the decolonisation process and guarantee the Sahrawi people’s right to freely determine their future.
