Luanda (Angola), August 31, 2026 (SPS) – President of the Republic, Secretary-General of the Polisario Front, Mr. Brahim Ghali, concluded his visit to Angola after participating in the extraordinary summit held in the capital, Luanda, to discuss ways to strengthen mechanisms for conflict prevention and resolution on the African continent.
Senior officials from the Angolan Ministry of Foreign Affairs were present at the airport to bid farewell to the President of the Republic. He also reviewed units of the Angolan Republican Guard, which rendered him a ceremonial guard of honour.
In his address to African leaders, President Brahim Ghali praised the important progress made by the African Union in building a continental peace and security architecture. He noted that the real challenge is no longer to establish more mechanisms, but rather to activate existing ones and provide them with the necessary resources and powers so that they can intervene in a timely and effective manner.
He stressed that the time has come to move from “silencing the guns” to building an African system genuinely capable of preventing the root causes of conflicts from emerging. He also said that the time has come to renew the collective commitment to decolonization, respect for peoples’ right to self-determination, and rejection of occupation, expansionism and the changing of borders by force.
The summit, attended by heads of state and government of the African Union, discussed strengthening the political, legal and financial tools available to the African Union to address crises and prevent the escalation of conflicts. It also addressed improving coordination between continental and regional mechanisms, mobilizing financial resources and strengthening accountability mechanisms.
The Luanda Summit sought to develop more effective mechanisms for dealing with conflicts and crises and to enhance the capacity of African institutions to contain conflicts before they escalate, thereby supporting stability and creating conditions for reconstruction and sustainable development efforts in affected countries.
President Brahim Ghali was accompanied by a delegation comprising Minister of Foreign Affairs and African Affairs Mohamed Yeslem Beisat; Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the African Union Lamine Baali; Ambassador to Angola Hamdi Khalil Mayara; and Secretary-General of the Presidency of the Republic Salha El Abed.
