Venice (Italy), August 31, 2026 (SPS) – The Representation of the Polisario Front in Italy announced that the documentary film “The Legend of the Sahara,” directed by Italian filmmaker Elisabetta Giannini and addressing the Sahrawi cause, has been officially selected to participate in the 83rd edition of the Venice International Film Festival.
The documentary goes beyond the cinematic dimension to issue a call to break the silence surrounding Western Sahara and to reflect on the responsibility of the international community to enable the Sahrawi people to exercise their right to self-determination and independence.
In this regard, director Antonietta De Lillo said: “It is a film that shows our contradiction as Westerners. We can no longer stand by and support the will of the strongest. The time has come to choose which side we will stand on.”
For her part, Fatima El Mahfoud, Representative of the Polisario Front in Italy, called on the Italian public to attend the screening, learn about the history of the Sahrawi people and support their just cause, describing this as an ideal means of breaking the wall of silence.
