Shaheed El Hafed (Sahrawi Refugee Camps), May 18, 2026 (SPS) – A delegation from the African Union Commission began a visit on Monday to the Sahrawi Republic to examine the Sahrawi national program for mine action and explosive remnants of war.
The delegation, composed of field experts, first visited the Sahrawi Mine Action Coordination Office, where they were received by officials from the office as well as representatives of various Sahrawi organizations concerned with the issue.
As part of the visit, the delegation toured an exhibition presented by a group of Sahrawi women experts in the field of mine action affiliated with the office. The exhibition included panels, photographs, and remnants of mines, in addition to showcasing some of the effects of the ongoing war between the two parties to the conflict in Western Sahara, particularly images of victims of Moroccan drone strikes, which have so far claimed more than 300 victims of different ages and both genders.
Experts from the office also delivered presentations to the delegation on the general scale of contamination by mines and explosive remnants of war in the liberated areas of the Sahrawi Republic, emphasizing that these areas are among the most heavily contaminated in Africa and the world. They also highlighted the key priorities targeted by the Sahrawi national program in combating this phenomenon.
On the other hand, the delegation held a technical meeting with the staff of the Sahrawi office, during which all aspects of the Sahrawi program, its achievements, and the existing challenges were discussed in detail.
