Occupied El Aaiun, April 5, 2026 (SPS) – The League for the Protection of Sahrawi Prisoners in Moroccan Prisons has received information that Sahrawi civilian prisoner El Wali Mohamed Ali Aina will begin Monday a 48-hour warning hunger strike inside the local prison in the occupied city of El Aaiun.

This hunger strike comes in protest against what the prisoner has been subjected to in terms of degrading treatment and systematic targeting, as well as in denunciation of the discriminatory policies practiced by the Moroccan prison administration against him as a political prisoner.

According to information obtained by the organization, the prison administration placed the prisoner in an overcrowded cell with common-law inmates, in what is seen as a clear act of retaliation due to his public political stance on the Sahrawi cause and his legitimate demand for the right to self-determination.

It is worth noting that Sahrawi civilian prisoner El Wali Mohamed Ali Aina was sentenced on May 17, 2022, to ten years in prison following what is described as a sham trial on fabricated charges. His only “offense” was his student activism at Ibn Zohr University and his peaceful advocacy for the rights of the Sahrawi people.
