Shaheed El-Hafed, March 8, 2026 (SPS) – Sahrawi women, like women around the world, celebrate today, Friday, International Women’s Day, observed on March 8.
On this occasion, Sahrawi women recall their pioneering role in various political, economic, social, and cultural fields, as partners, supporters, and influential actors in building the Sahrawi State.
In this context, the National Union of Sahrawi Women (NUSW) reaffirmed in a statement the values of struggle and resilience, as well as the determination of women to defend freedom, dignity, and justice. For Sahrawi women, this day holds a special significance, as it coincides with the anniversary of the fall of the first martyr in the course of our people’s struggle—a pivotal moment that marked the beginning of a long path of great sacrifices for freedom and independence.
The statement added that Sahrawi women have, throughout decades of struggle, remained a symbol of resilience and dedication, and an active partner in the battle for liberation and nation-building. Through their awareness and sacrifices, they have contributed to preserving the cohesion of society, strengthening the values of solidarity, and carrying the voice of the Sahrawi cause to various international forums.
The NUSW expressed its highest expressions of solidarity and appreciation to the steadfast Sahrawi women in the occupied territories, who courageously and resolutely confront the machinery of repression and persecution under the weight of the brutal Moroccan occupation. The harassment, arrests, and systematic violence suffered by Sahrawi women in the occupied cities will only strengthen their determination to continue their peaceful struggle in defense of their people’s legitimate right to freedom and self-determination.
It further expressed deep pride in their legendary resilience, affirming that their sacrifices will remain a beacon guiding the path of the national struggle and living proof that Sahrawi women have always been—and will remain—at the forefront of defending the dignity of their people and their legitimate rights.
The National Union of Sahrawi Women also renewed its firm commitment to continue the struggle alongside the Sahrawi masses and their active forces. It called on the international community and human rights and women’s organizations to assume their moral and legal responsibilities, stand by Sahrawi women, and protect them from the serious violations they face in the occupied territories.
