Madrid (Spain), March 4, 2026 (SPS) – The Parliament of Catalonia has reiterated its support for the inalienable right of the Sahrawi people to self-determination and independence, affirming its commitment to defending international legality and the rights of the Sahrawi people in the face of the continued Moroccan occupation.
In a statement issued on Wednesday on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the proclamation of the Sahrawi Republic, the Catalan Parliament explicitly condemned the 1975 Madrid Tripartite Accords, which paved the way for the division of the territory and the end of Spanish colonial presence without enabling the Sahrawi people to exercise their right to self-determination, denouncing Morocco’s occupation of Western Sahara.
The Parliament stressed that the Sahrawi people have an inalienable right to freely determine their future without delay, in accordance with the United Nations Charter and the principles of international law. It stressed that the Sahrawi Republic, proclaimed on February 27, 1976, represents the legitimate and sovereign expression of the will of the Sahrawi people within the framework of the decolonization process of the territory.
The Parliament of Catalonia called on the Spanish State to assume its historical and legal responsibilities as the administering power of the territory, urging Madrid to work seriously and effectively toward organizing a free, fair, and transparent self-determination referendum under United Nations supervision, enabling the Sahrawi people to determine their political future.
In the same context, the Catalan Parliament called on the United Nations, particularly the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO), to fully adhere to its core mandate of organizing the referendum. It also demanded the inclusion of a clear mechanism to monitor and document human rights violations in the territory, ensuring the protection of Sahrawi civilians.
It further denounced the illegal exploitation of Sahrawi natural resources, calling on European and international institutions, as well as economic actors, to respect international law and the rulings of the Court of Justice of the European Union, and to refrain from any agreements or economic activities that contribute to entrenching or legitimizing the occupation.
In conclusion, the Parliament of Catalonia reaffirmed its firm commitment to supporting the rights of the Sahrawi people and defending respect for international law, reiterating its support for a just, peaceful, and definitive solution to the conflict that guarantees the Sahrawi people the exercise of their right to self-determination and the achievement of their full sovereignty.
