Mexico City (Mexico), January 23, 2026 (SPS) — The Mexican Senate has reaffirmed its country’s support for the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination, praising the relations it has maintained with the Sahrawi Republic since 1979.
During a meeting with the Sahrawi Ambassador to Mexico, Mohamed Salem Abdel Samad, members of the Mexican Senate renewed their support for the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination, emphasizing the strength of relations between the two countries.
Mexican parliamentarians recalled their country’s commitment to the principles of foreign policy based on “respect for international law and non-intervention in the internal affairs of states, as stipulated in the Mexican Constitution,” stressing that these principles constitute the “cornerstone of the country’s foreign policy.”
For his part, the Sahrawi ambassador expressed his country’s deep appreciation for Mexico’s position, noting that Mexican parliamentary support represents a fundamental pillar in defending the rights of the Sahrawi people, foremost among them their inalienable right to self-determination.
He also highlighted the humanitarian dimension of the conflict, particularly the situation of Sahrawi refugees, calling for the continuation of Mexico’s supportive presence at both the political and humanitarian levels.
