Canary Islands (Spain), January 20, 2026 (SPS) – The municipality of La Frontera in the Spanish Canary Islands has adopted a motion rejecting the serious human rights violations in occupied Western Sahara, reaffirming solidarity with the Sahrawi people and defending international legitimacy in this occupied territory.
According to Spanish media reports, the Municipal Council of La Frontera unanimously approved, on January 15, this institutional motion that categorically rejects human rights violations in the territories of Western Sahara occupied by Morocco.
Through the motion, the municipal council renewed its commitment to defending the fundamental rights of peoples around the world, particularly in occupied Western Sahara, given its geographical proximity and historical ties with the Canary Islands.
The municipality of La Frontera also reaffirmed its rejection of Morocco’s attempts to impose its colonial proposal in Western Sahara, as well as its rejection of the unilateral decision taken by the Moroccan occupying government to include the maritime area of Western Sahara under its sovereignty, stressing that Morocco has no sovereignty over this territory.
The council further pointed out that this unilateral measure contradicts United Nations resolutions and the rulings of the Court of Justice of the European Union, and violates the legitimate rights of the Sahrawi people.
