Luanda (Angola), 25 November 2025 (SPS) – On the sidelines of his participation in the 7th African Union–European Union Summit, the President of the Republic, Secretary-General of the Frente POLISARIO, Mr. Brahim Ghali, met on Monday with the United Nations Secretary-General, Mr. António Guterres.

The President expressed to the Secretary-General the Sahrawi side’s appreciation for his efforts to achieve peace and justice in the world, especially in Africa. He stressed that the question of Western Sahara — the last decolonization issue in Africa, listed on the agenda of the UN General Assembly and its relevant committees — is still awaiting a solution through enabling the Sahrawi people to exercise their inalienable right to self-determination.

The President also referred to the recent UN Security Council Resolution 2797 (2025) and outlined several issues raised by the draft resolution, including attempts by some parties to alter the nature of a case that has been registered with the United Nations as a decolonization issue since 1963. He affirmed that such attempts will not resolve the conflict and do not serve peace, security, or stability in North Africa.

He reaffirmed the Sahrawi side’s cooperation with the Secretary-General and the United Nations in order to enable the Sahrawi people to exercise their established right to self-determination — a right belonging exclusively to the Sahrawi people and one that no one can exercise on their behalf. He further reiterated the POLISARIO Front’s readiness to enter into serious, genuine, and unconditional negotiations under UN auspices to create the conditions in which the Sahrawi people can freely and sovereignly decide their future, in accordance with UN resolutions and the principles of international legality.

The UN Secretary-General commended the in-depth discussion held regarding the recent Security Council resolution and the positions expressed. Addressing the prospects of the UN-led peace process in Western Sahara, he referred to the intention of his Personal Envoy, Mr. Staffan de Mistura, to engage with both parties, expressing hope that these efforts will lead, as soon as possible, to the launch of serious and unconditional negotiations consistent with Security Council resolutions.

Present at the meeting on the Sahrawi side were the Minister of Foreign Affairs and African Affairs, Mr. Mohamed Yelem Beissat; the Sahrawi Ambassador to Angola and Namibia, Mr. Hamdi El-Khalil Mayara; the Adviser to the Presidency, Mr. Abdati Breika; and the Adviser in charge of Media and the Arab World, Ms. Nanna Labat Errachid. On the UN side, senior officials from the Secretary-General’s Office and representatives of the Organization attended.
