Madrid (Spain), November 13, 2025 (SPS) – Spanish political parties have called on their government to return to supporting international legitimacy, which affirms the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination, according to Spanish media reports.

These parties took advantage of the presence of Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez at the plenary session of parliament on Wednesday to urge him to “correct his mistake regarding Western Sahara,” following his support for the so-called Moroccan “autonomy plan.”

They stressed the need to return to Spain’s traditional position of supporting the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination.

In her speech before parliament, the spokesperson for the EH Bildu party emphasized that “the Sahrawi people must continue to receive support after the mistake committed by the government in withdrawing it,” a move she said only encourages “Morocco’s impunity, its ongoing illegal occupation, and the denial of the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination.”

She pledged to pressure the country’s executive branch to “reconsider” its support for Morocco’s colonial proposal, reminding parliament that she had requested the appearance of Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares before the chamber to discuss the issue of Western Sahara.

For her part, the representative of the Sumar party warned the government of “the legal and political consequences of its support for the Moroccan occupation, especially regarding the Sahrawi people’s resources.”

She affirmed that, for the sake of “historical memory and political integrity,” Spain must recognize the Sahrawi people’s inalienable right to determine their future and to exercise sovereignty over their natural resources, as failing to do so is “a mockery of European court rulings.”

She further stressed that “the only path to peace in Western Sahara is self-determination and independence.”

Meanwhile, the Secretary-General of the Podemos party stated that “it is time to correct the Prime Minister’s position in support of the Moroccan proposal,” adding that “the majority of the Spanish people do not support this stance but rather defend the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination.”

She also emphasized the need to “stop submitting to the dictates of the Moroccan dictatorship.”
