National Council, October 7, 2025 (SPS) – A Swedish parliamentary delegation was received on Tuesday at the headquarters of the Sahrawi National Council.

The delegation represents the Swedish Network for Solidarity with the Sahrawi People and includes members from various political parties and Swedish civil society.

The delegation held a meeting with Mr. Hama Salama, member of the National Secretariat and President of the National Council. The meeting focused on the latest developments in the Sahrawi cause and ways to enhance cooperation in parliamentary work.

The President of the National Council welcomed the Swedish delegation, praising the Swedish solidarity movement—including various political forces and civil society actors—for its longstanding support of the Sahrawi cause since the Moroccan occupation of Western Sahara to the present day. He commended the advanced stance taken by Sweden, including the Swedish Parliament’s approval of a resolution recognizing the Sahrawi Republic.

On this occasion, the President of the National Council presented a symbolic gift to the Swedish delegation—a flag of the Sahrawi Republic.

Mr. Hama Salama also provided a comprehensive briefing on the work of the Sahrawi National Council and emphasized the importance of activating parliamentary diplomacy to strengthen parliamentary relations and promote awareness of the Sahrawi cause in various international forums.

He criticized the European Commission for circumventing the decision of the European Court of Justice, which annulled agreements between Morocco and the European Union that include Western Sahara.

The Swedish parliamentary delegation also participated in a discussion session with the Committee on Foreign Affairs, Media, and Protocol of the National Council, as well as the Sahrawi-Swedish Parliamentary Friendship Committee, which was officially established on Tuesday by the President of the National Council.

The delegation visited a photo exhibition at the National Council, through which they learned about the experience and historical development of the Sahrawi National Council over the past 50 years since its founding.

The Swedish delegation was accompanied by Ms. Sennia El-Bashir, the POLISARIO Front’s representative in Sweden.
