Madrid, 13 September 2025 (SPS) - The Spanish party Sumar called Friday on the government to contribute to ensuring the European Union's compliance with the ruling of the European Court of Justice, which annulled partnership and fishing agreements with Morocco, and to approve holding consultations with the Polisario Front, the sole and legitimate representative of the Sahrawi people.

According to the Spanish website PressDigital, Enrique Santiago, the deputy of the Sumar party and leader of the United Left Party, stated during a press conference that the European Court of Justice issued its ruling in October 2024 to cancel the aforementioned agreements between the European Union and Morocco because they were applied to the territory of Western Sahara without the consent of the Sahrawi people.

He pointed out that "for reasons of legal stability and to avoid negative consequences for the EU's external actions, the agreements were extended for 12 months, but this period ends on the upcoming October 4." He added that "the rotating presidency of the EU has begun negotiations to reach an agreement that provides legal stability for the parties involved in the illegal plundering of Sahrawi natural resources."

The Sumar party also urged the Spanish government to "take the necessary measures to ensure that products from Western Sahara are labeled as originating from this territory, in accordance with the ruling of the European Court of Justice, which confirms that these labels must not refer to Morocco in any way."

Santiago concluded by saying, "We believe this is a fundamental issue. The Spanish government, like other governments in the European Union, must comply with international law and fully adhere to the ruling issued by the European Court of Justice."
