New York (United Nations), September 13, 2025 (SPS) - Dr. Sidi Mohamed Omar, Member of the National Secretariat of the Polisario Front, the Representative at the United Nations and Coordinator with MINURSO, emphasized the Sahrawi side's persistent call for the United Nations to assume and activate its legal and political responsibility towards the Sahrawi people.
This affirmation came during an interview conducted yesterday, Friday, via Zoom from New York by the Sahrawi diplomat with Algeria International Channel for its evening broadcast. The discussion focused on the recent message sent by the President of the Republic, Secretary-General of the Polisario Front, Mr. Brahim Ghali, to the United Nations Secretary-General, Mr. António Guterres, which has been circulated as an official document of the UN Security Council.
The Sahrawi diplomat pointed out that the message from the President of the Republic, Secretary-General of the Polisario Front to the UN Secretary-General comes as the latter is preparing his annual report on the situation in Western Sahara, which is expected to be submitted to the Security Council by the end of this month or early next month.
He added that the message includes a comprehensive overview of the situation in the occupied territories of the Sahrawi Republic, which, as highlighted by the President of the Republic in his message, is deeply concerning due to the war crimes and severe human rights violations committed by the occupying state of Morocco, along with policies of scorched land, displacement, and intimidation against Sahrawi citizens in those areas.
The Representative of the Polisario Front at the UN and Coordinator with MINURSO recalled that the UN Secretary-General has consistently stated in his reports that the United Nations and its relevant bodies remain entirely prohibited from entering occupied Western Sahara due to the stance of the Moroccan occupying authorities. Therefore, the message is part of the Polisario Front's ongoing communication with the United Nations to inform it, and through it the international community, about the true situation in the occupied territories of the Sahrawi Republic.
In conclusion, he emphasized the Sahrawi side's continuous call for the United Nations to assume its legal and political responsibility towards the Sahrawi people and to activate that responsibility by establishing necessary mechanisms for permanent monitoring and protection of human rights in the occupied Sahrawi territories until the Sahrawi people can exercise their inalienable right to self-determination and independence.
