Maputo (Mozambique), August 4, 2025 (SPS) – The National Union of Sahrawi Women (NUSW) participated in the 9th workshop on Institutional Impunity and Human Rights, held in the Mozambican capital, Maputo.

The NUSW was represented at the event, organized by the Environmental Justice Organization, by Ms. Khadija Ali, alongside international networks focused on the intersection of climate justice, human rights, and combating impunity for transnational corporations.

During this important international meeting, the Sahrawi delegation delivered a detailed presentation on the grave human rights violations suffered by the Sahrawi people in the occupied territories of Western Sahara, as well as the systematic plundering of natural resources by multinational corporations operating in the region with the support and complicity of the Moroccan occupying state.

The Sahrawi delegation focused on the role of these corporations, particularly those involved in phosphate mining, fisheries, renewable energy, and the export of sand and minerals. Their activities are conducted illegally and unlawfully, in blatant violation of international humanitarian law, UN resolutions, and rulings by the European Court of Justice, which has clearly affirmed that Morocco holds no sovereignty or right to administer the territory of Western Sahara.

The Union also highlighted the direct and indirect impact of these colonial activities on Sahrawi women, who suffer not only from political repression and severe human rights abuses but also from systemic poverty, unemployment, forced displacement, and gender-based violence as a result of the occupation.

The NUSW strongly condemned the complicit role of multinational corporations, whose economic interests contribute to prolonging the illegal occupation and denying the Sahrawi people their inalienable right to sovereignty over their natural resources and self-determination in economic and social development.

The delegation worked to build bridges of cooperation with feminist and progressive organizations participating in the workshop, exchanging experiences in struggle and emphasizing the importance of international solidarity in achieving justice, dignity, and sovereignty for all colonized and oppressed peoples.

The delegation also issued an urgent appeal to all participants to break the silence, shed light on the situation in Western Sahara, and pressure governments and corporations to cease all forms of involvement and complicity with the Moroccan occupation.

The participation of the National Union of Sahrawi Women in this event represents a strategic opportunity to internationalize the Sahrawi cause, amplify the voice of the Sahrawi people in global forums, and emphasize the need to end impunity for corporations exploiting the resources of the Sahrawi people under Morocco’s brutal occupation.
