Asturias (Spain), July 29, 2025 (SPS) – The General Assembly of the Principality of Asturias (the regional parliament) welcomed Monday a group of Sahrawi children participating in the Holidays in Peace program.
The program allows Sahrawi children to spend their summer in Asturias with host families, offering them a break from the harsh conditions they endure in the Sahrawi refugee camps.
The reception at the General Assembly included an official greeting from the President of the Asturias Parliament, Juan Cofiño. The children, accompanied by members of the assembly, were welcomed in the Europe hall. This event is part of an annual tradition in which Asturias hosts Sahrawi children during the summer.
The Holidays in Peace program is a solidarity initiative carried out in several regions of Spain, including Asturias. It provides the children with a chance to stay in a milder climate compared to the Sahrawi refugee camps, where temperatures can reach extreme levels. Staying with Asturian families also allows them to experience a family environment and learn about a different culture.
