New York (United Nations), June 25, 2025 (SPS) – The Polisario Front’s representative at the United Nations and coordinator with MINURSO, Sidi Mohamed Omar, welcomed the recent decision of the Special Committee on the Situation with regard to the Implementation of the Declaration on the Granting of Independence to Colonial Countries and Peoples (Committee of 24), which reaffirms the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination, freedom, independence, and sovereignty over their natural resources. He stressed that "it is time for the occupying Moroccan state to cease plundering the wealth of the Sahrawi people."
In a statement to the Algerian Press Agency (APS) on Monday, Sidi Mohamed Omar said that the decision adopted by the UN Committee of 24 on the final day of this year’s session is "extremely significant, both politically—as it falls within the core mandate of this committee, which exclusively addresses decolonization in accordance with UN General Assembly Resolution 1514 (XV) and all other relevant resolutions—and economically, particularly regarding sovereignty over resources."
He added that this decision "reaffirms the principles upon which the United Nations bases its decolonization efforts and the General Assembly’s support for the right of colonized peoples to self-determination and the choice of their political future, including independence. Thus, it reaffirms the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination, freedom, and independence."
The Sahrawi diplomat stated that the committee’s decision regarding economic activities in territories under decolonization sends a "strong message" to the occupying Moroccan state, which continues to plunder the Sahrawi people’s wealth despite rulings from the European Court of Justice and the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights on this matter.
