Statement

The Central and Eastern European Alliance for Solidarity with the Saharawi People (the CEE Alliance) takes note with concern of recent developments in the Western Sahara issue, characterized by some countries' alignment with Moroccan occupier views.

The CEE Alliance calls for the respect the International Law, confirming that Western Sahara is under occupation and establishing the right of the Sahrawi people to self-determination. Supporting this right anchored in UN doctrine is a support against "occupation” which is described by the relevant UN resolutions as a "crime against humanity".

The CEE Alliance reminds that over its eighteen-year existence, this so called plan has never been submitted to the Saharawi people as a basis for negotiation, nor has it ever been taken seriously by successive UN Envoys. All of these envoys have noted the hollow nature of the Moroccan autonomy initiative and its inability to provide a serious and credible solution to the Western Sahara conflict.

The so called plan was never intended to serve as a basis for political settlement of this conflict. It is also in total violation of the international law and cannot produce any legal effect on the right to self-determination. The so called Moroccan plan aims to make the occupation permanent and allow Morocco to gain time and gradually acclimatize the international community to the fait accompli of the illegal occupation of Western Sahara.

The CEE Alliance expresses the hope that, the International Community and the un Security Council will continue to hold Morocco accountable for its international responsibilities and will also continue to uphold international legality, particularly UN decolonization principles.

The Alliance for the Solidarity with the Saharawi People is reiterating the importance of the European Court of Justice's ruling in October 2024 that Western Sahara is distinct and separate from Morocco, and that the Saharawi people must be able to self-determine. They must be able to decide their own future and return to their homeland, Western Sahara.”
