Tenerife (Canary Islands), May 24, 2025 (SPS) – The Polisario Front’s representative in the Canary Islands, Ali Salem Sidi Zein, participated in the proceedings of the 13th Congress of the Canary Islands Workers' Committees in Tenerife on May 22 and 23.
The congress brought together over 130 delegates from across the Canary Islands archipelago. During the event, a new leadership was elected, and the organization’s action plan for the upcoming period was approved.
The opening and closing sessions were attended by numerous regional and local authorities, including representatives from the regional government, the Canary Islands Parliament, various political parties, and labor organizations.
The Polisario Front’s representative in the Canary Islands delivered a speech before the attendees, expressing gratitude to the Canary Islands Workers' Committees for inviting the Front’s delegation. He highlighted the historic ties of friendship between the Canary Islands Workers' Committees—and Spanish labor organizations in general—with the Sahrawi Workers' Union (UGTSARIO). He also emphasized the strong solidarity between the Sahrawi and Canarian peoples, with the latter consistently expressing unwavering support for the Sahrawi cause and their just struggle for freedom and independence.
Several speakers during the congress addressed the Sahrawi issue, reaffirming their solidarity with the Sahrawi people and their just struggle.
At the conclusion of the congress, an important resolution on the Sahrawi people and their just cause was adopted. The resolution reaffirmed the Sahrawi people’s inalienable right to self-determination and independence while strongly condemning Morocco’s illegal occupation of Western Sahara.
The congress also called on Spain, as the de jure administering power of the territory, to fulfill its decolonization obligations in Western Sahara and support international efforts to guarantee the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination and independence.
Additionally, the congress urged the international community, particularly the European Union, to take concrete measures to pressure Morocco into respecting and implementing international law and the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination. It demanded an immediate halt to Morocco’s plundering of Sahrawi natural resources and called for the enforcement of European Court rulings that prohibit the import of Sahrawi products without the consent of the Sahrawi people.
The congress further called on the United Nations to uphold its resolutions on Western Sahara by ensuring that MINURSO fulfills its mandate: organizing a self-determination referendum for the Sahrawi people.
