Shaheed El Hafed, May 1, 2025 (SPS) – The General Union of Workers of Saguia El Hamra and Rio de Oro (UGTSARIO) sent its condolences on the passing of the freedom fighter Mohamed Ali Mukhtar Ahniya (may he rest in peace), who passed away yesterday, Wednesday.
The late hero was one of the operatives who carried out the fedayeen (commando) operation targeting the conveyor belt of Sahrawi phosphate on October 20, 1974, during the era of Spanish colonialism. At that time, Spain was illegally exploiting the natural resources of Western Sahara throughout its colonial occupation, which lasted nearly a century.
This operation—which Sahrawi workers commemorate as a national day of remembrance—marked one of the first chapters in the end of Spanish colonial presence in Western Sahara. It took place before the signing of the treacherous Madrid Accords, a tripartite agreement that betrayed Sahrawi aspirations, despite earlier prisoner exchange agreements and confidence-building measures that were supposed to lead to the self-determination of the Sahrawi people.
As the Union honors the noble legacy of this deceased hero of the Sahrawi people, it reaffirms its commitment to following his path and continuing the struggle to restore the dignity and full sovereignty of the Sahrawi people over the territories of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR).
