New York (UN), 30 April 2025 (SPS) — Algeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations (UN), Amar Bendjama, affirmed Monday in New York that Sahrawi refugees who had suffered forced displacement from their homeland by the Moroccan occupier need a lasting solution that enables them to exercise their inalienable right to self-determination.
In his speech at a Security Council meeting on migration and refugees, Bendjama noted that Algeria has hosted Sahrawi refugees in the Tindouf camps for over half a century, following their forced displacement due to the occupation of their land by Morocco.
In this regard, he said that throughout this period, despite enormous challenges, “Algeria, in cooperation with UN agencies and humanitarian partners, has consistently ensured access to basic services for Sahrawi refugees.”
Algeria’s Permanent Representative to the UN said that these refugees today need “a durable solution that enables them to exercise their inalienable right to self-determination through a free and fair referendum as enshrined in international law and UN resolutions.”
Bendjama underscored that “the decision about the future of the Sahrawi refugees is and must always rest with them,” as their right is inalienable and cannot be subject to any compromise, regardless of the circumstances.
Algeria’s Permanent Representative to the UN warned against the displacement crisis that intensifies year after year, noting that the number of migrants continues to increase due to multiple crises, particularly armed conflicts, in a context marked by “the decline in international funding, which leaves millions of vulnerable people without access to vital aid.”
